Baptism, is it really necessary in this day and age?

I think this a personal choice. What you read is one of the reasons I do not follow organized religion anymore. I personally also think that your child should make the choice of being baptized. Not all churches believe what you read BTW. I think a dedication ceremony is more appropriate. But this is just my personal opinion and topics like this you will get a million different opinions but the only thing that matters is what you think is best for your child.
