Keyboard inserts random letters while typing?

My laptop keyboard occasionally inserts random characters — everything from letters to function keys, like the Windows key, Home, Page Up and Down, brackets, and Num, Caps and Scroll Lock. It's been doing this, I think, since I got it — and it *only* happens while I'm typing. What could be causing this? Bad hardware or drivers? Viruses?
