Do Private investigators get paid a flat fee or do insurance companys pay for milage/Gas also?

When I worked for a company in Kentucky, they paid hourly plus mileage and expenses. I'm sure it depends on how the contract is set up, but my impression is that paying for mileage and expenses is pretty standard. If they don't, you can always deduct it from your taxes as a business expense.
