Why does an oxidised copper coin turn pink when placed in hydrochloric acid?

Oxidised copper which is brown coloured turns pink when placed in hydrochloric acid. Why is this so? What is the brownish thing on the surface of the copper coin. Why is it there? Why does it disappear?
